Royal & Prior Comprehensive School
Parents’ Association:
Constitution:
Objectives of the Royal and Prior Parents’ Association:
1. The promotion of the role of parents and guardians as those entrusted with the primary responsibility for the education of their children.
2. The pursuance of fundraising for the benefit of the School.
3. The fostering of understanding and cooperation between parents, teachers and the Board of Management.
4. The encouragement of members to take an active interest in the school through participating in social and other activities.
Subscription: An annual minimum subscription per family shall be payable to the Association. The amount of the minimum subscription shall be decided at the Annual General Meeting.
Committee: The ordinary business of the Association shall be conducted by a Committee drawn from the membership of the Association, consisting of not more than two representatives from each of the electoral areas served by the school, and elected annually at the A.G.M. of the Association. The Principal and Deputy Principal shall be ex-officio members.
The main aim of the Parents’ Association is to raise funds, support the school and extra curricular activities such as travelling expenses and PE equipment. Last year with the help of the Canteen Committee, the Association helped provide security cameras and bought new tracksuits for the girls’ hockey team. This year the Parents’ Association is having a fashion show in association with Mc Elhinney Stores Ballybofey, which we hope will be a great success. Other activities include providing tea and lunch on First year Parents’ Meetings and on Parent / Teacher Meetings. For further information on the Parents’ Association, Write to the Parents’ Association Secretary, c/o Royal and Prior School Raphoe, Co. Donegal.
One of the aims of the Parents\’ Association is to raise money, which is used for the benefit of the school and consequently the students. It was with joy that the committee, on behalf of the parents/guardians handed over €20,000 last summer for the purchase of long awaited, new computers. This money was raised through a number of events including a fireside quiz, a Guest Tea and Bag Packing at Tesco, Letterkenny. The Bag Packing netted €3,260. Thank you to the members of the 38 families who helped on that occasion and to all who generously supported the fundraising initiatives. We are grateful, too, to all the artistes who gave of their time and talents to entertain the audience at the Guest Tea and to all who worked so tirelessly to make the event a success.
Funds were also made available for the Study Skills Training for First Form Students; the work of the Student Council; the Transition Year Mini Companies; the transport for the First XI Hockey Team so it could participate in the Irish Schools Hockey tournament; the hire of the Public address system for the Royal Variety Concerts and the Parents\’ Association Prize for Senior Prize Giving which, in 2008, went to Emma Cassidy to whom we send our warmest congratulations.
The committee is also involved in the discussion of draft copies of school policies. This year the draft copies of the School Code of Conduct and the Transfer (Induction) Document have been discussed. On your behalf various topics like the possibility of bus shelters, supervision in the car park after school, fireworks in school, a Book List at the beginning of term, the possibility of a copy of the report outlining the findings of the Mental Health Survey, carried out by Nicole Sihera from Finn Valley Alliance, being available to all, the supervision of pupils who were unable to take part in PE, the \’timing\’ of the Debs and the large increase in bus fares were raised.
We congratulate all students who have won medals and indeed all who have represented the school in the sporting events organised to celebrate the quatercentenary of the five Royal Schools in Ulster. We also congratulate all who have painstakingly and tirelessly organised the celebrations this year. It has been a privilege to share in them. As a means of marking the occasion, the committee has decided to set up a Commemorative Garden, a place of reflection, incorporating a seating area, seasonal plants, lighting and paving, in the grounds of the school. To raise funds for this project an auction will be held on 23rd May 2008 in the school. Prior to that bag packing has been organised for 4th and 5th April in Asda, Strabane. Funds from this will be put towards the refurbishment of the canteen. Your help and support with both these events would, as always, be greatly appreciated.
